When I first decided to launch this site, I had a few domain names in mind. I started with appropriate words that would be easy to spell and remember. Femina. Ms.Biz. All taken by major organizations.
I moved on to word combinations that began with “woman” or “women” with and without capitals, dots and spaces. Women.Can. Do. Reach. Will. Strong. Stars. Biz. Rock. Nothing. Weird spellings. Nah. Weird hybrids like “womenspiration” and “fempowerment”? Nada. Chick? Chica? Uh uh.
I was stumped. Alright then, thought I, let’s move away from the "woman" thing. How about potent terms like “power”, “dyna-something” or “go-getter”? Nyet. I put the search on the back burner and started building the site, checking every now and then when a new possibility entered my mind. Everything I came up with was already in use by someone or something, mostly empowerment groups and political organizations but also moving companies and electrical contractors.
I decided to just go with my name. Hardly a creative stroke of genius, but I was fresh out of inspiration. To my great delight, it then came to pass that this site will be a platform for other writers as well. Maybe my solo name on the domain comes across as a shade autocratic?
I know! Other languages! I searched many of the words I began with, this time in Spanish and Italian. I finally hit on one I really liked. Forte. “Strong” in Italian and, in English, "something at which one excels".
Perfect for a magazine featuring strong women who are excelling at what their passions have inspired them to do. I hope you enjoy their stories as well as the words of my fellow writers, interestng and inspiring women all.
